Networking as a Practice, Not a Personality Trait

Networking for introverts and professionals

The Myth of the Natural Networker

When someone says the word networking, what comes to mind?

Chances are, you’re imagining an overly confident extrovert. They’re probably working the room, shaking hands, laughing a little too loudly, and collecting business cards like they’re rare Pokémon cards.

For many of us, that image alone is enough to make us shudder. Add the misconception that you need to be “natural” to succeed at networking, and it’s no surprise that so many people avoid it altogether!

Networking Is a Skill, Not a Trait

But what if I told you this is all wrong? Networking isn’t about being born with charisma or a magnetic presence. It’s about skill. It’s a muscle anyone can strengthen with practice.

Hard to believe? Stick with me—we’re about to reframe how you see networking.

There’s a dangerous myth that some people are just natural networkers while others aren’t “cut out for it.” This couldn’t be further from the truth. Networking isn’t a talent you’re born with, but a discipline you build over time.

Practice Over Personality

Think about learning to play an instrument. Everyone sounds clunky and off-key at first. But with consistent practice and a plan, you get better. Networking works the same way.

It’s About Consistency, Not Charisma

The truth is, no one walks into their first event or sends their first LinkedIn message without feeling awkward or unsure. The difference between those who excel and those who don’t isn’t natural talent—it’s persistence.

Authenticity Over Volume

  • Show Up and Show Intent: The key isn’t to dominate a room; it’s to be intentional about the connections you’re making.
  • Consistency Builds Momentum: Networking success isn’t about a one-off dinner or a single coffee chat; it’s what happens when you keep showing up.

Final Thoughts: Just Show Up

And here’s the good news: you don’t have to be the loudest in the room. You just have to be present and authentic.
